About Mattan

Mattan is a town that belong s to Anantnag district of Jammu & Kashmir. It is sited at a distance of 10 km away from its district Headquarters Anantnag and 62 km away from the state capital Srinagar. Mattan is also known as Martand since the popular and historic Martand temple is located very close to the town. The name Mattan came from Macch – Bhawan in which Macca is a name of a fish. Urdu, Hindi and Kashmiri are the most spoken languages of Mattan.

The town is one of the highest Hindu populated towns in Jammu and Kashmir. The town has a long spiritual history.  Sadar Bazar is a very famous locality of the town. The Mattan cricket ground is a very popular sports ground in Anantnag district known for many local matches.

Geography of Mattan

The town is elevated at a height of 1603 m above sea level and it has its coordinates at 33.775391° North latitude and 75.206673° East longitude. It is bounded by Dachnipora Tehsil in the wes, Shangus Tehsil in the South, Warwan Tehsil in the East and Anantnag Tehsil in the South. Mattan lies very close to the banks of River Liddar towards its North West. The Brah canal runs through the town. The town grounds numerous small water bodies among which Kamal kund and Vimal kund are very popular.

The cities that are sited close to the town are Anantnag at 10 km away, Srinagar at 62 km away, Bandipore at 85 km away and Sopore at 93 km away. The Taluks located nearby the town are Tral at 20 km away, Dachnipora at 28 km away, Shangus at 32 km away and Warwan at 35 km away. The districts that are sited nearby the town are Pulwama at 43 km away, Kulgam at 51 km away and Badgam at 51 km away.

Demography of Mattan

As per 2011 population census the town has a total population of 9246 people out of which male constitutes 5101 and female constitutes 4145. The town homes nearly 1384 families within its borders. The sex ratio of the town is 813 female out of 1000 male. Out of the total Mattan population 14.63 % i.e. 1353 belongs to children population in the town between the age group of 0 to 6 years. Out of the total child population nearly 691 constitute boys and the rest of 662 constitute girls. The child sex ratio in the town is recorded as 958 girls out of 1000 boys. This ratio is very much higher than the average Jammu and Kashmir state average ratio of 862. 

The literacy rate in Mattan is recorded as 73.33 % which means nearly 5788 people of the total town population are literates. The Mattan literacy rate is higher than the average state value of 67.16 %. The male literacy rate constitutes 82.77 % i.e. 3650 males and the female literacy rate constitutes 61.38 % i.e. 2138 females.  Out of the total Mattan population nearly 3458 people are recorded as illiterates.

The total number of people employed in the town is recorded as 3710 out of which male constitutes 2827 and female constitutes 883. Out of the total working population nearly 71.18 % i.e. 2678 people are engaged in main work and 27.82 % i.e. 1032 people are engaged in marginal work. Out of the total Mattan population nearly 1.16 % of people belong to Schedule caste and 0.49 % of people belong to Schedule tribe.

Mattan operates under Kashmir valley administrative division of state administration. Mattan belongs to Anantnag Lok Sabha constituency and the current MP of the town is Shri Mehbooba Mufti. Also the town comes under Anantnag Vidhan Sabha constituency and the current MLA of Mattan is Shri Mufti Mohammad Sayeed.

Pandit Late Shri Badri Nath Sidha was a very popular personality of Mattan town who is well known for his educational reform in Mattan as he is brought awareness among the locals about the importance of education and acted as a prime factor to increase the literacy rate in Mattan. The current generation of Mattan is also well aware of this vibrant personality due to whom the town at present stands as one of the highest literacy rate towns of Jammu and Kashmir. Currently the grandson of Pandit Late Shri Badri Nath Sidha named Deepak Sidha who is a writer cum poet also following his grand father’s footsteps to bring up the literacy rate in Mattan.

Mattan has a very strong roadway transport system. The KP Road is the major road running through the town connecting it with its nearby localities. The other major roadways in the town are the Mattan Gopalpur road, Islamabad Mattan road, Central jail road, Pranbawan road, Sadar Bazar Mattan road and many more.

The town doesn’t own an airport or a railway station. The airports that are sited close to the town are Srinagar International airport at 66 km away and Satwari airport at 250 km away from the town. The Jammu Tawi railway station is the nearby major railway station from the town which is sited at a distance of 248 km away. The other railway stations close to Mattan are Brijbehera railway station at 30 km away and Panjgam railway station at 25 km away. The town has good local transportation facilities also.
